Pastors Shane and John respond to questions from Sunday’s message on the 8th Commandment: “You must not steal.” You can listen to that message here: https://www.westwaychurch.com/portfolio-item/june-30-2019-do-not-steal-exodus-2015/ Here is this week’s question: 1- This week when I read through the study guide, I was stopped dead in my tracks when Achan stole the devoted things instead of destroying them- a robe, some gold and silver, and He confesses!! I was hoping to turn the page and find the mercy I get for my sins. But the result is stoning and burning to death for him and his entire family and all livestock. Compare this to David's sin of stealing a mans wife and ultimately his life and losing one child from an illness. Joshua 7:1- the Lord burned with anger against an entire nation. 2 Samuel 11:27- the Lord is displeased How? Why? What can we learn about the character of God in these seemingly unbalanced examples of sin and wrath, and very different punishments? Clarifying questions... Why does God's punishment seem so much more severe for Achan than for David? Why would God's anger burn against all of Israel for Achan's sin, but be "displeased" with David when his sin seems so much more grievous and he is in a leadership position!? And ultimately, in relation to my sin, how much wrath did Jesus take for me? We can understand all the mechanics and physiology of crucifixion, but the unseen spiritual payment He made for me that day I may not understand until I am in the presence of God.
